What Are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth that may be used to restore a smile's appearance and function when a patient is missing many (or all) of their teeth. While dentures have a history that goes back for many centuries, advances in modern dentistry have made these prosthodontic restorations more comfortable and natural-looking than ever. Dr. Todd K. Baum is experienced with full and partial removable and implant-supported dentures for men and women in Grand Ledge, MI. Single-arch dentures take the place of each of the teeth in the top arch, lower arch, or both, whereas partial dentures are employed if a few of the natural teeth still remain in the jawbone. At Dr. Todd K. Baum, DDS, PC, our team can help you learn if removable or implant-supported dentures are ideal for your aims and have them specially designed to provide a nice appearance and comfortable fit. Set up your restoration assessment with Dr. Baum today.

Are You a Candidate for Dentures?

Ideal candidates for receiving dentures are adults who are missing many teeth or are going to have teeth removed. Dentures work to improve your dental function, allow you to consume healthy foods, and help maintain your facial volume. These restorations work most effectively if the gum tissues are in good condition and there is an adequate amount of bone to hold them in place. At your visit with Dr. Baum, he will assess your oral health and review your possible options depending on your requirements, aesthetic preferences, and wallet. Using this information, our team will help you determine if dentures are ideal for your needs and the form that may best suit your individual circumstances.

What Can I Expect Getting Dentures?

In order to ensure a comfortable fit for your custom-made dentures, our office will take 3D impressions of your top and lower arches. These digital images will be sent to a state-of-the-art dental lab that will use them to make your unique set of dentures. Made of high-quality substances, dentures are intended to replicate the look of real teeth and the gumline. Complete and bridge dentures use light resin, which could be reinforced by a titanium internal frame. When your appliances have been crafted and are ready at our office, we will schedule a fitting appointment for you. At this time, Dr. Baum will adjust your appliances so they are comfortable or connect them to already positioned metal posts. Our staff will also discuss the best ways to take care of your personalized dentures.

Talking and eating may feel a bit strange as you adjust to your dentures, but you'll get used to the feeling in time. In cases where your dentures seem to be shifting around, please get in touch with Dr. Todd K. Baum, DDS, PC so our staff can arrange a refitting appointment.

About Us
Can I sleep with my dentures in?

It's generally recommended to remove dentures at night to allow your gums and jawbone to rest. This helps to prevent issues like sore spots and fungal infections.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

While it may take some time to adjust, most people can eventually eat a wide variety of foods with dentures. Initially, it's recommended to start with soft foods and gradually progress to harder items.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

It may take a few weeks to get used to wearing dentures. Initially, they might feel bulky or uncomfortable, but with time and practice, most people adapt.

Are dentures comfortable to wear?

While dentures may take some time to adjust to, many patients find them to be comfortable and functional once they become accustomed to wearing them. Initially, patients may experience some discomfort or soreness as they get used to the feel of the dentures in their mouth, but these issues typically resolve with time and proper adjustments by the dentist.

How do I care for dentures?

Proper care and maintenance of dentures are essential for maintaining oral health and prolonging the lifespan of the prosthetic. Dentures should be cleaned daily with a soft-bristled brush and denture cleaner or mild soap and water. They should be removed at night and soaked in a denture solution or water to keep them moist and prevent them from drying out. Additionally, regular dental check-ups are important for monitoring the fit and condition of the dentures and addressing any issues that may arise.

How long do dentures last?

The lifespan of dentures varies depending on factors such as the quality of materials used, the individual's oral hygiene habits, and changes in the mouth over time. On average, dentures may last anywhere from 5 – 10 years before needing to be replaced or refitted due to normal wear and tear or changes in the jawbone and gum tissues. Regular dental check-ups are important for assessing the condition of the dentures and determining if any adjustments or replacements are necessary.
